When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 and President Zelinski requested foreign volunteers to help fight, I decided I would go and do what I could to protect the people of Ukraine. I had never been in combat but had trained in the Canadian military and felt I had something to offer. After applying through the Ukrainian embassy I made my way through Poland to the Ukrainian border and was taken to a collection point for foreign volunteers where we were interviewed for suitability. Once there were enough of us, we were transported to a military base for training and to be issued equipment.
After about a month of training our unit was moved East to the Kharkiv region where we very quickly took up a defensive line across a river from Russian troops. My main role in the early days on the front was to gather intelligence on Russian missile and rocket attacks, which were almost constant. Initially I don’t believe the Russians knew we were occupying the position I was in because we weren’t attacked for a couple weeks. Once they realized we were there, we were hit with mortars daily, sometimes for several hours a day. We continued to do our jobs through the attacks, always worried that Russian forces would cross the river to attack us directly. After a period of mortar attacks we started taking heavy artillery and missile fire which ended up destroying the building we were in.
After about six months of fighting in Ukraine I decided to come home and get back to normal. Although I have had some issues returning to ‘normal’, fortunately I was able to join the abnormal team at Nexus 6 and have learned a great deal about digital marketing from them. While I’m no longer looking for Russian intelligence or being hit with mortars, Nexus 6 certainly keeps me on my toes. One of the things I love about my job is that I get to be on the front lines of meeting new people and helping them improve their businesses. I enjoy getting to know people and finding out what we can do to help them.
