It’s March, and sports fans everywhere are getting ready to fill out their brackets for money and pride as we try to show everyone our great insights into the world of college basketball. Pundits and pontificators all across the country will be taking to the airways on sports talk radio and podcasts with hot takes and deep dives. Twitter and Facebook will be full of keyboard coaches sharing pictures of brackets, all claiming to be winners using methods ranging from statistical analysis to gut feelings. And of course, coworkers will be cornering you at the water cooler to tell you all about what they think will happen and how it will all play out. The NCAA tournament is notorious for upsets and Cinderella stories and madness in general. And while being able to pick the eventual winner isn’t anything special, picking how the whole tournament is going to play out is nothing short of statistically impossible. With a little bit of basketball knowledge or just a basic understanding of how a tournament gets seeded, it has been estimated that you have a 1 in 120 billion chance of picking it exactly right. But let’s say you do not have any basketball knowledge and want to go with the pure chaos that is random chance. Well, a coin flip called correctly for each of the 63 games results in a 1 in 9.2 quintillion chance of being perfect. Gambling outside of a regulated sports book is illegal in Iowa. So be careful before filling out those office pools for money, or getting in bed with some high rollers your buddy knows online to try and get a piece of that 1 in 120 billion action.
